Shantena Augusto Sabbadini ha lavorato come fisico teorico all’Università di Milano e all’Università di California. A Milano le sue ricerche riguardavano la descrizione del processo di osservazione nella fisica quantistica, un problema che continua ad affascinarlo a tutt’oggi. In California ha contribuito alla prima identificazione di un buco nero.
Negli anni Novanta è stato consulente scientifico della Fondazione Eranos, un centro di ricerca Oriente-Occidente fondato sotto la guida di C.G. Jung negli anni Trenta. In quel contesto ha prodotto traduzioni e commentari di vari classici cinesi, fra cui l’I Ching e il Tao Te Ching.
Dal 2002 è direttore associato del Pari Center for New Learning, un centro di educazione alternativo situato nel piccolo borgo medievale di Pari, in Toscana. È lettore presso lo Schumacher College, Devon, UK, e conduce corsi e seminari su fisica quantistica, taoismo e uso dell’I Ching come strumento di introspezione.

Shantena Augusto Sabbadini, born in Como (Italy) in 1943, is a physicist, philosopher, teacher, and translator. He worked on the foundations of quantum physics at the University of Milano and contributed to the first identification of a black hole at the University of California. Presently he is Associate Director of the Pari Center for New Learning, an interdisciplinary learning institution located in the medieval village of Pari, Tuscany, and Lecturer at the Schumacher College, Devon, UK. He is interested in issues of mind, matter and consciousness and in Eastern wisdom traditions. He has translated into Italian and commented several Oriental classics, particularly the works of the Taoist masters.
From 1994 to 2002 he was associated with Eranos as a scientific advisor, and collaborated with Rudolf Ritsema and Christa Robinson in planning, organizing and running the Eranos Round Table Sessions. He regularly gave Introductions to the I Ching and occasionally lectured on various topics, including Dreams and Divination, In and Out of Time, Pilgrimage to Emptiness in Chinese Poetry and Oracle, etc. Together with Rudolf Ritsema he authored two I Ching translations, I Ching, il libro della versatilità (1996, in Italian) and The Original I Ching Oracle (2005, in English). He is also author of Tao Te Ching: a Guide to the Interpretation of the Foundational Book of Taoism (2013). In the ‘new Eranos’ in 2012 he gave the talk The Nameless Dao: Laozi and Quantum Physics. He is the author of the article Eranos, Synchronicity, and the I Ching: A Personal Journey in the issue Spring 92: Eranos of Spring Journal, 2014.
